In 2014 we started our Ladies Only rides to help encourage people to get back into cycling on gentle, fun, short cycle rides. They proved very popular and a great way for people to make new cycling friends while improving their confidence and picking up some cycling tips.
For 2015 we’re running another series of organised rides in South Buckinghamshire. The Cycle Chilterns ladies rides are fun, recreational group bike rides led by an experienced female cyclist and will explore the country lanes and quieter roads of the Chilterns. All of the rides start in quiet market towns, most of which have train stations for easy access.
Ride leader Helen Biggerstaff has many years of experience and will be able to give information on what bike and kit to purchase and where to find female friendly bike shops.

Who is it for? Women! (max number 8 riders)
How fit do I need to be? If you haven’t exercised for some time you should seek advice from your doctor before you start, as with any new activitiy. Rides will last an hour, covering a relatively short distance at a very steady pace. There will be some hills involved (this is the Chilterns!) some will be long and steady, some short and steep. Walking up hills is fine and you’ll soon see improvements!
What sort of bike do I need? Any roadworthy bike will do. If your bike needs a check up, pop along to your local bike shop for the once over.
Erm, I don’t have a bike? No problem! Just get in touch, we have access to free hybrid bike hire, plus electric bikes.
What do I wear? Whatever you’re comfortable in – lycra is not a prerequisite, normal clothes are fine. Dress for the weather but make sure you can take a layer off if you get too hot or add one if it starts to get cold. If you’re wearing trousers, make sure the bottoms are quite tight fitting or put a band around them so they don’t flap around and get caught in the chain.
More questions? Helen will be more than happy to help out and give you some advice – there’s no such thing as a silly question.
HOW TO BOOK
Each ride is limited to 8 people so booking is essential. To book please email firstname.lastname@example.org or call Helen directly on 07795 030847
OTHER RIDES TO JOIN
With the motto “Smileage not mileage” these ladies rides are organised by CTC South Herts. Ride leader Rona Wightman usually has a basic short ride in mind, but can can add extra loops if the group are going well. They generally cover eight to ten miles. If only ‘faster’ regulars turn up they can cover fifteen miles. There’s always a coffee stop and they try and take in points of interest en route. See the website for dates, times and more details.
Not specifically for ladies but very popular anyway, the rides take place every Saturday at 10am from The Rose & Crown in Ivinghoe. The route and destination is not decided in advance – so feel free to arrive with a suggestion! The abilities and time constraints of all riders is taken into consideration too, so it’s a great group to join if you’re new to cycling or getting back on your bike after a bit of a break. All makes, models and ages (bikes & people!) very welcome – although under 16′s should be accompanied by an adult.
The local Beaconsfield cycling club (affiliated to CTC and BC) run regularly ladies rides every Wednesday morning from Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire. Rides cover around 15-25 miles. Please check with the club to confirm ride details and suitability.
What about the guys?
We don’t currently run any gentlemen only rides because no-one has ever asked for them and ride leaders have never offered to run them. But that doesn’t mean we wouldn’t if demand was there. So if you have a group of 5 or 6 guys that want to be taken on a gentle ride to get back into cycling, just get in touch via our Contact page and we’ll see if we can help.
